What are the best kitesurfing beaches in and around Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is one of the world’s best kitesurfing destinations, with a diverse range of beaches that provide ideal conditions for twin tip riding, surfboard and foil kiting. Some of the best kitesurfing beaches in Cape Town, South Africa are as follows:
- Bloubergstrand: One of Cape Town’s most popular kitesurfing spots, known for its consistent winds and flat water. The beach has a laid-back vibe, and there are numerous restaurants and cafes nearby. There are a number of different spots along this stretch of beach including Dolphin Beach, Kite Beach & Doodles.
- Langebaan: About 120 kilometers north of Cape Town, Langebaan is a beautiful lagoon with excellent kitesurfing conditions. The shallow water and consistent wind make it ideal for both beginners and experienced riders. There are many kitesurfing schools that use Langebaan for its beginner lessons.
- Big Bay: Located just a few minutes from Bloubergstrand, is another famous kitesurfing beach in Cape Town. It has great waves and a long beach, making it perfect for both kitesurfing and surfing. The wind at Big Bay can be a little lighter than higher up in Blouberg due to the way the land flows. This can be both advantagous or frustrating depending on how strong the wind is blowing that day.
- Sunset Beach: As the name implies, Sunset Beach is home to some of the most stunning sunsets in Cape Town, as well as excellent kitesurfing conditions. Because of the high wind, the beach is best suited to experienced riders. This beach is well known as a great start point for downwinders. There are often a lot of windsurfers here and the wind blows slightly offshore and comes over the land making the take of spot a bit gusty.
- Muizenberg: With a long, shallow beach and regular winds, is an excellent site for intermediate riders who can stay up wind. Because the waves aren’t too big, it’s a good area to learn and practice kitesurfing. The wind blows onshore at this spot so kitesurfers need to be aware of being pulled onto the land or into building or structures. The large flat between the rolling waves create an amazing smooth ride for practicing tricks.
- Witsands: Witsands is a gorgeous beach with breathtaking views and good kitesurfing conditions, about 2 hours from Cape Town. It’s a little off the beaten path, but it’s well worth the journey for anyone looking for a more secluded kitesurfing location. The spot has a section where the wind blows over the beach before hitting the lagoon water creating a very smooth take off ( jumps ) section that is extremely fun.

Remember to always check the weather and wind conditions before going out, and make sure to follow all safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable kitesurfing experience.
